April 22 marks the 35th Earth Day in the United States. The idea for a day dedicated to the environment originated 7 years earlier by Senator Gaylord Nelson. He was concerned over the lack to awareness and regulations of the pollutants being released into our world.
Now more than 35 years later, Earth Day and its organizers have increased public awareness of pollutants, identified and promoted “green” acts, have leveraged our schools and communities to enhance the knowledge and dedication of our youth to the cause, and countless other accomplishments.

The Earth Day websites (http://act.earthday.org/) is tracking personal pledged to commit “green” acts. The pledges include recycling grocery bags, unplugging appliances, recycling paper and plastic, and buying more local food. While each of these acts may seem futile on their own, the impact of the collected groups across the globe will have a significant impact on our environment, especially over an extended period of time. To date the website has over 1 billion personal pledges.

Earth day is awesome but I think it need to be celebrated more. It's good because people plant trees and ride bikes but I think it should be like that all the time. Some things my family could do at home are to plant trees and be more energy efficient. The school should have home room parties in celebration. We should ask people to ride our bikes to school and get a reward if you do.
ReplyDeleteI think that Earth Day is great. You get to go outside, help the environment, and generally feel good about yourself. We can support Earth Day by just using common sense and asking ourselves if what we're doing is good for the environment. At home I pick up trash and we always recycle if we can. We could plant more trees to support "green" living.
DeleteI think Earth day is fun. But not a lot of people take Earth day fun. We should not have a holiday that is only one day. It should be every day. It is very good because everyone helps out. At least almost everyone. We clean up trash and plant new trees and help the envierment. When I was in Third grade I went around and put little signs by the gutter or any where people put their trash into. I like Earth day because it helps make the earth clean.
ReplyDeleteI like Earth day a lot because it gives you a chance to realize how awesome our earth really is. Everybody spends to much time worrying about things that are not even that important. We should celebrate in schools more. Not just have celebrations but maybe our whole school could plant a tree. I usually ride a bike to Huntington. I could plant a tree at my house or something similar to that.
ReplyDeleteI think earth day is a great thing because it supports keeping the earth and environment clean. Some ways we can support earth day are by recycling and not littering or polluting the earth. At home I recycle cans and other recyclables and I don't throw those things away. some things I could do at home are ride my bike instead of have my mom drive me to some place. Instead of having lights on all the time we could just have one light on or when you are leaving your house you could turn off all of the lights also you could turn off the water when you are not using it.
ReplyDeleteEarth day con be fun if we remember it and celebrate it but if we totally forget then it can not be so fun. we can remind people about it and tell them some ways to help like pick up trash even if it is not yours. I could plant more plants and make sure we pick up our trash and not use the car so much.
ReplyDeleteI think Earth Day is a great way to wise awareness about the problems the Earth is facing. This includes pollution, littering, and using up resources too quickly. On Earth Day last year at my old school, we watched a movie about pollution and then had pizza and planted trees. It was a fun way to both have fun and help the Earth. At my house we recycle all the time, like we fill our recycle bin before we fill our trash can. We reuse grocery bags or we use reusable ones. Also, I am not allowed to take super long showers. All this is good for the environment and helps conserve our resources. I will try to pick up trash left on the ground so that it doesn't harm our soil or water. I will also try to bike and/or walk more often than driving. Earth Day is a good time to start conserving, preserving, and reusing. Let's save our Earth and go green this Earth Day!
ReplyDeleteI love Earth Day and I think that without it this planet would be in a much worse pace than it is right know. I think that we could support earth day in a couple of ways. One of my friends goes to Sage International and for earth day there they go up to Bogus Basin and pick up trash along the roads and trails. At home I recycle as much as I can and I pick up the trash that is in the street when I see it. I think that I might work on not wasting water because that is a little common for me. I also try to bike wherever I can like to my Lacrosse practice.
ReplyDeleteI think Earth Day is a great way to show awareness about the problems Earth is facing like littering, pollution, and not recycling. At my house we have three recycling bins and another one where we but glass bottles and they are overflowing all the time. We also try to carpool as much as we can. We also use paper bags instead of plastic bags when we go grocery shopping but if they don't offer them we reuse our plastic bags. We also don't have anything in our lunches that you throw away like ziploc bags. I need to work on taking shorter showers. Go Green!!!
ReplyDeleteI think Earth day is a great way to help the world realize that we need to protect our planet or we will end up like Mars with maybe previous life forms but no liquid water. In our community we can have an a day where all the kids could bike to where they need to go or use anything that doesn't take up burning fossil fuels. At home I can see if anything is recyclable and recycle it. Stuff like cans and plastic bottles. At home I need to work on Taking showers that use less water. Trying to live a "green" life.
ReplyDeleteI believe Earth Day is a reminder of what we are putting in the air from cars, what we are dumping in our oceans etc. In our community we could walk to certain places or bike. In my house we can take shorter showers, not leaving the lights on as long and recycling biodegradable tools. I will commit planting a tree or making my family do certain things. Water our plants and more stuff like that. This is OUR Earth, we have to keep the Earth clean and well respected.
ReplyDeleteI think Earth day should be less celebratory and more lets work to plant trees and recycle. When people trough concerts on Earth day is problem does not help the earth. We could go to table rock and pick up trash and carpool more often. Our community could change to electric cars. We could recycle paper and bike more often. We recycle and when we are in Sun Valley we almost never drive a car. If we do drive in a car we carpool. I could bike and carpool more often.
ReplyDeleteI think Earth Day is a great way to get people to et excited about using Earth's resources efficiently. It reminds us that without Earth, we probably wouldn't be here today. Every Earth Day, I think about how I can be more efficient with Earth's resources and learn how not to waste them. Last year when I was in the 5th grade I got a shower head that didn't use up as much water as my shower head before my new one did. I also put a timer on my phone set to 3:00 minutes so I wouldn't take a 20 minute shower like some people I know do. At school I believe that we should try to go on some type of field trip to a park or somewhere to clean up the community. At home you should try like I said above, try not to use up a lot of water because like we all know California is in its biggest drought season by far. We should also recycle our cans and paper. This is important because it allows the companies to make new objects out of the cans and paper we toss into the recycling. We as humans should also be working on riding our bikes more often instead of driving two minutes to a destination. We need to work hard on these tasks because they are not exactly possible to do. We also need to help California by not using up as much water. Whenever we don't drink all of our water, we shouldn't just dump it down the drain. We should try to treasure it because some people in California are begging to have one glass of water. We need to become one and try to stop this from getting out of our hands.
ReplyDeleteI think that Earth day is not really very helpful because shouldn't we sane the earth every day not just one day in April. We should try to do little things all the time so we can save the Earth? Also why do we think that saving the Earth is all about picking up trash and recycling things that is true but no one ever thinks about planting trees and building things out of recycled materials I mean Earth day should be every day and we should spend more time on trying to use things that are environmental friendly for example pesticides are horrible for the environment and what about using plastic bags which are huge problems because they take so long to decompose . So buy organic food and use paper bags or cloth bags and those little things will help the environment. So when your at school and you are at lunch recycle every hing you can and only put things you cant recycle in the trash. Use a lunch box and save your bags and wash them so you can use them again. At home you can wash dishes by hand or at least utensils because that way it saves water and you dont have to start the dish washer so many times also if your clothes aren't dirty wear them again. These things could save the environment.
ReplyDeleteI think Earth Day is very important to our community because it helps us realize that we need to keep the Earth clean for futures to come. At school and in our community we should plant trees, try to walk to places more, and if we see a piece of trash we pick it up. At home I can try to not take a long shower and turn off the water when I am not using it. I can keep riding my bike to my swim team practice and not throw things away that can be reused like ziploc bags. Earth day is a very good way to tell people that we need to start being aware of keeping out earth healthy and clean for many generations to come. Go Earth Day!!!
ReplyDeleteI think Earth Day really reminds of us how beautiful our communities are. So I think its very important that we have Earth Day. At home I can try to keep the lights off when I am not in my room more. I can try to use less water. I can use less water by not taking as long in the shower and not keep the water on when I brush my teeth. I can help my community by picking up trash off the sides of roads. I also think its very important to keep the earth clean because of all the animals. We need to take care of the roads not littering and throwing stuff on the ground. We want to keep our community clean!! Another thing is we can reuse things. There is this amazing thing called recycling. That we can take our papers and bottles and reuse them for crafts or other fun stuff!!! So I think Earth Day is very very important. Earth should be kept clean!!
ReplyDeleteI think Earth Day reminds us that we need to protect our earth and is a very good cause. Something that sort of worries me is that we only spend one day truly noticing we need to protect the environment and even so, some people still don't seen to care only finding out from someone on the radio or TV talk about it or see the decoration for google. Also, some thins people do on earth day aren't entirely eco friendly. Schools hang banners all over the place but unless their using recycled materials their using tons and tons of paper and were does that come from? Trees. In addition their have been concerts during this time and when people trample on the grass it isn't the best for the environment. Still, it is good to show awareness and it gets people to recycle and to do much more so for the most part the idea is great its just how we react to it.
ReplyDeleteI like earth day because we have a whole day to making the earth a better place for the people of the world. The other day I saw a group of kids out on the river picking up the trash so is does not flout into the river. Turn of ht water when I am not using it, unplug charges when I don't use it and turn of my lights when I leave the room. Many make a compost bin for all of the left over food scraps. Walk sometimes instead of driving a car around and polluting the air around us.

ReplyDeleteEarth day is a great way to spread awareness about keeping Earth clean etc. A good way to help the community is to clean up our trash, recycle, and ride the bus or bikes occasionally to not burn fossil fuels by using cars. Riding buses is a great way to help prevent added on pollution, because all those people are not driving cars which means less pollution, although the bus is still polluting just not as much as all those cars would. Some great ways to help the Earth at our houses is to shower less, turn off lights, and to use less electricity. We could also, in addition to other things eat better foods, conserve, etc.

It helps people remember to take care of the earth but it also shows how bad we are at taking care of the earth that we need a whole holiday just to remind ourselves. In our community we have a day to pick up trash from the parks around the community. I take short showers and turn off the lights ans recycle ect. At home my family is trying to use less electricity. AT my house we recycle nore than we through things into regular trash cans. We should as a community be better at being green!

ReplyDeleteI think Earth Day is an awesome day to celebrate because it shows the people on how well we take care of this world today. I think we should have this holiday more than once a year because this celebration gives people relizations of this world today on how to save it and control from going into its bad effects. in our community I think students should go to places around Idaho and pick up trash of course around the places that need most cleaning up. The things I do at home are I put the right kind of trash in the right kindof trash can to recycle in. Then I especially turn off the lights when I don't need them and don't be wasteful of the water at my house because I don't want to have a drought just like California is having right now. I don't want to turn into that mess.
ReplyDeleteI think earth day is good day to remember how good we have treated this earth. I sweep the leaves, recycle and try not to waste food at school. At home instead of throwing boxes in the trash I recycle them. I could to a garbabge sweep in my neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteI think the meaning behind Earth Day is good but I don't really think it is a life changing day. Most people don't know its earth dray ands if they the majority don't do anything about it. I think at schools they can have the kids do something for the environment so they become more aware. To help the earth at home I turn off lights when I leave a room. At home I also recycle. I would be willing at home to save more paper.

ReplyDeleteEarth Day might not seem like a important holiday but it is. Earth day reminds us that we need to take care of our environment, not just earth day but everyday. If we do not take care of our earth then so many bad thing should happen. We learn this from the Rapa Nui. On Easter Island they used all the trees and then it was survival of the fittest. We all need to work to protect our environment. Things you do dosent have to be hard. Dont litter. Recycle, of you see trash on the ground pick it up. These are all easy things that if people did everyday then our earth would be a cleaner place
ReplyDeleteI think Earth Day is great! It promotes taking care of the environment and conserving resources. Earth Day is just all around a good idea. But, the way humans exercise Earth Day is not good. We hold huge rock concerts in Parks and erode the parks and the people attending the concert leave a lot of trash behind. Humans have the right idea but the way we exercise that idea is wrong. We have to think about our actions as we are doing them, and think, is this right or wrong? My family is one of the best recyclers in the neighborhood. We produce very little trash and produce a lot of recyclables. Our family makes sure everything we're throwing away, can't be recycled. Earth Day is a good IDEA and as humans it is our responsibility to help our Earth be the best it can be.

ReplyDeleteI think Earth Day is a great day to celebrate the creation of the Earth and to realize what we need to do to improve it. Some more ways to support Earth Day more is to maybe make a project and tell it to the class. In your project tell about the history of Earth Day and tell of the big problems that are hurting our planet. Some things you could do at home are to pick up trash at parks or watch what your family is putting down the drain. Some things I would definitely do are to pick up trash at places and tell people to not dump toxic waste into sewage drains or just a faucet or sink. We must keep our planet clean for the generations after us.
