The Second Inauguration



On Monday the nation witnessed the second inauguration of President Barack Obama.  The catch phrase from the address according to MSN is “The possibilities are limitless.”

Presidential inaugurations, whether first or second, have embodied the spirit of the United States.  They have lifted the ideas of Americans and set the course for the direction of the country. 

Thomas Jefferson looked to unify the nation after a divisive election:

 "Every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle. We have called by different names brethren of the same principle. We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists. If there be any among us who would wish to dissolve this Union or to change its republican form, let them stand undisturbed as monuments of the safety with which error or opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it."- March 4, 1801

Abraham Lincoln reminded the country of our need to heal during his second inauguration as the Civil War was coming to and end:

 "With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation’s wounds, to care for him who have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations." – March 4, 1865

Ronald Reagan, in his first address, focused on the economic issues plaguing the country.  He looked to inspire and motivate the people.

"My fellow citizens, our nation is poised for greatness. We must do what is right and do it with all our might. Let history say of us, ‘Those were the golden years — when the American Revolution was reborn, when freedom gained new life, when America reached for her best.’” – January 20, 1981

Every president since Jefferson has tried to communicate the idea that America’s best days are ahead of us.  We are always striving to be something better than what we are today.  It is part of the idea of being an American.  I like to think each of us as individuals and as a country are always trying to improve ourselves and our nation.  We want to leave the world a better place for the generations that follow.

  1. ben- my favorite quote was obamas because it says “The possibilities are limitless.” which it is true in some ways if you want to be president or anything the possibilities are limit less and if we think differently we would have a very depressed society and are marines would be thinking that they wouldn't survive and would just give up and surrender so we wouldn't be a country unless we thought like the possibilities were limit less

  2. Elizabeth- Obama said " Don't just get involved fight for your seat at the table!" This quote says you can't just want to make it you have to work for. Obama did there were many mean things that people said about him but that did not make him give up.

  3. Henry-Jimmy Carter said, "You can do what you have to do, and sometimes you can do it even better than you think you can." I chose this quote because this is an inspiring quote and it also reminds me to do my best no matter what.

    i chose this quote because this means if you work hard and try your best you can make it.

  5. Kylee- I choose the quote from Franklin D. Roosevelt that says "The only thing to fear is, fear itself." What this means to me is that you should not be afraid to try something new or challenging. Everything seems scary at first but you will never know if your good at something until you try it.

Sam- One of my favorite quotes from an American President is when Jimmy Carter made a sharp reference to how Reagan voted against Medicare and social security as a governor of California, Reagan responded "There you go again." I like this quote because Ronald Reagan didn’t want to dwell on the past, and as you described in the Blog he wants to move forward like every other American citizen. He had the mentality of someone who wants to linger and lollygag, he wants to put America back on track.

  7. Claire- A favorite quote of mine from an American President is from Abraham Lincoln that says, "Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the ax." I chose this quote because it can relate to almost anyone at any time. It can be if you're at school, and your teacher gives you time to work on your homework but you just sit and talk. To me, this quote means to spend your time wisely, and not to spend the whole six hours trying to chop down a tree with a dull ax.

  8. Grace- I like the quote, "Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek", by President Barack Obama, because it means that we shouldn't keep waiting for change and opportunity to come to our feet. We need to make a change now, and look for opportunity ourselves. President Barack Obama is, in my opinion, a great and noble leader who understands what we want and need. He would try and try to help satisfy all Americans, because he cares for us and wants us to live happy lives. That is part of the reason why he ran for president in the first place. He had great ideas that helped improve America, and has a lot more of them.

  9. Margaret- My favorite quote is " The only thing to fear is,fear itself" - Franklin D. Roosevelt. I choose this quote because I know its true and its my favorite. It tells that you should never be afraid and if you are afraid, you are afraid of fear and not the thing that your afraid of.

  10. Graci- My favorite quote from a president is "As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy. Whatever differs from this, to the extent of the difference, is no democracy." - Abraham Lincoln. I like this quote the best because it reminds us that slavery is cruel and should have never started. Also, it tells us that if you were an owner of a slave you would be just as bad as the person we started it.

  11. Madeline- I choose a quote by James Madison, the Fourth President of the United States. One of his quotes was “The truth is that all men having power ought to be mistrusted.” I think this quote is good, because if a man stands above the rest and has a lot of power then he could easily do something that could hurt you or others. I think this quote means that you have to be careful how much power you give someone over something because they could somehow take advantage of you. For example, if you were to give one man the power over the whole United States, than he could easily do something to betray us.

  12. Austin- Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt. I chose this quote because I think that people that often say everything and don't just keep it to themselves get there feelings hurt more than the people that just stay silent. This means to me that people should remain more silent then to just talk all the time.

  14. Charlie- "Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction" that was said by John F. Kennedy. I chose this quote because it shows you to stand and not back down from what you believe is right. To me it means to not be shy and believe in what is right for you, your country, Your faith and so forth.

  15. Jack- My favorite quote is "possibilities are limitless" this was said by the number one man in the world barack obama. This says that anything you want can be accomplished as long as we help. I chose this quote because the best man in the world said that to the whole country!

    this is the quote that stood out to me and it means that we should all be friendly to one another in order to acheive succes.

  17. Robert Fritz- My favorite quote from a past president would probably be from Ronald Reagan, and his quote was, "man is not free unless government is limited." The reason that I choose this quote was because I liked the way that it helped the people to understand that without a limited government there are less unreasonable rules that are passed and more reasonable rules. I think that the quote means that a limited government can actually be a good thing.

  20. Emily- My favorite quote is by James Madison, "The circulation of confidence is better than the circulation of money." I chose this quote because it tells you that having confidence in yourself is more important than having a lot of money.
